Otsuka Pharmaceutical's 0.9% Sterile Sodium Chloride Irrigation USP is used for various clinical indications, such as sterile irrigation of body cavities, tissues, or wounds; indwelling catheters; surgical drainage tubes; and for cleaning, rinsing, or soaking surgical dressings, instruments, and laboratory specimens. It is also used as a diluent or carrier for drugs used in irrigation or other pharmaceutical preparations.

The 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection USP provides an isotonic saline flushing solution, which has the same composition as the 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection USP (physiological saline).

• Physiological flushing solutions are generally considered to be compatible with living tissues and organs.
• Sodium is the main cation in extracellular fluid and is primarily used to control the distribution of water in body fluids, fluid balance, and osmotic pressure. Sodium also works with chloride and bicarbonate to regulate the acid-base balance of body fluids.
• The main extracellular anion, chloride, is metabolized following sodium ions, and changes in the body's acid-base balance are reflected in changes in chloride ion concentration.
